1991年にニューヨーク州の北西部バッファローで結成。90年代半ばから頭角を現し、（ややハードな、でもときに緩やかな）ロックやファンクをベースにしたインプロヴィゼーションを繰り広げるライヴにファンが急増。同時にロック・シーンを席巻したジャム・バンド・シーンを同じ米国北東部出身のPhishとともに牽引した。 2000年以降、定着したジャム・バンド・シーンから派生したフェスティヴァル・ブームではPhish、String Cheese Incidentらとともに常連となる。過去5回の来日公演を果たし、日本でもジャム・バンド・ファンにとどまらず、ロック～ファンクなど、ジャンルを越えて幅広いファンを獲得。2010年のフジロックでフィールド・オブ・ヘヴンの大トリを飾ったことは記憶に新しい。
