11歳の時にウクレレとクラリネットを覚えたスタンリー・スミス。以来、40年以上に及ぶ音楽歴＝旅のなかで、1960年代にはパリで路上ライブ、70年代にはインディアナポリスでカフェ＆バーを経営。また、尊敬するレオン・レッドボーン、タジ・マハール、ジョン・ハートフォードなどのミュージシャンと共演を果たす。テキサス州オースティンでアサイラム・ストリート・スパンカーズとジャズ・ファラオズに参加、一躍注目を浴びる。現在はオースティンを拠点に活動。2002 年10月に初来日。9年ぶりの2011年に2度目のジャパンツアーを敢行。スモーキーヴォイスと上質なグッド・オールド・アメリカン・ルーツを凝縮したサウンド作りで観客を魅了した。
